Setting the Record Straight: Four Cloud-Based Communications Myths

Cloud-based communications technology has come a long way since it was first introduced. However, it’s surprising to still see some of the old common myths and misconceptions persisting to this day.

As with any new technology, Cloud-based communications did have its issues for early-adopters, and some of these myths may once have been true. However, the technology has advanced considerably since those days so let’s revisit some of these misconceptions.

Myth #1: The Savings aren’t Worth the Costs

Modern cloud communications come with a host of cost saving features, including unlimited local, long distance, and international calls (including Canada and 25 other countries), at a fixed and low monthly rate.

A Hosted PBX cloud communications solution in particular is incredibly cost efficient to setup and maintain, and the average user saves up to a staggering 70% on their communications costs when compared to a traditional phone system.

Myth #2: The Sound Quality is Unreliable

Back in the early days of commercially available internet, network connectivity was slow and highly unreliable, which lead early VoIP services being notoriously bad. The sound on calls would often be accompanied by hissing static, or voices sounding like they were underwater. Calls were also prone to spontaneously dropping in and out or disconnecting entirely.

However, with modern high-speed broadband, services are optimized for voice-transmission and voice signals gain priority over other forms of data. This makes modern cloud-based communication comparable, or even superior, to landlines, and usually significantly superior to mobile communication, in terms of sound quality and reliability.

    Myth #3: It’s a Pain to Install

Cloud-based communication systems are significantly easier to install than a traditional line-based network. All you need is the hardware, a service plan, and an internet connection, and you’re ready to go.

Your provider will setup and configure your system, verify your internet connection, and provide technical support and assistance throughout the whole process. Most VoIP phones come pre-configured and plug-and-play ready, to make setup even easier.

There are no phone lines to install, and no giant junction terminals to deal with.

Myth #4: They’re Cumbersome to Scale

When it comes to growing your business, you are inevitably going to take on more people at some point, and you want to make sure you can provide them with a phone line quickly and efficiently. With a traditional phone line setup this would have meant getting a phone engineer in to install and provision extra lines to the necessary offices, and then make sure the correct hardware is installed.

With cloud-based communications this could not be further from the truth. To upscale a VoIP service, it’s a simple matter of contacting your provider, adding the extra lines to your plan, and purchasing the necessary additional handsets.

No changes need to be main to your building’s infrastructure, and no engineers need to visit.
